About Me-

Hello! I'm Poppy-Rose, I am 25 years old and I'm a mixed media artist. I took an interest in art from a very young age, my mum was a punk and loved everything colourful, fantastical, gothic and punk. She was the biggest influence in my life, the best advice she gave me was to always just be myself and to continue creating work that makes me happy and even if other people don't like it, someone will.

Art to me has never been about just doing one thing, I think its important for me to be able to use all of my talent and abilities to create stuff, I dislike sticking to one technique or one medium, there is a whole world of possibility out there and I aim to do as much as I can, I love how crazy my space can be, it's my own little habitat and its where I thrive the most.

Here you can read about my influences, who I am, my interests, a bit about my life and why I create the art I do, so grab a cuppa and enjoy the read and getting to know me!

I have been surrounded by goth, horror, fantasy, punk etc, my whole life, my mum being a punk and into goth and horror from a very young age, my dad into his rock and metal. Alternative and out of the 'ordinary' has actually always been normal to me, the dyed hair, crazy makeup, the clothes, being brought up going to punk, rock, alternative festivals, it's where I feel at home. I did spend a lot of my teenage years trying to 'fit in', but as I grew up, I started to find myself and confidently express who I am, I realised that people will have negative opinions towards you no matter what you look like/ what you do.

So with the influence of the coolest parents I could have asked for, there came my art, as I grew older and started to find myself, my art grew with me. Art is whatever I want it to be. I remember being told that my art wouldn't get any where, but just because someone doesn't necessarily agree or enjoy the work you create doesn't mean that everyone won't. My mum was my biggest supporter throughout all of my life and that was the only thing that mattered to me, she cheered me on and she encouraged me to go and find myself, to get out into the big world, and I listened to her, I went and studied Contemporary art and Illustration at the University of Huddersfield and despite the lockdown circumstances, I had a brilliant time and developed as an artist even further.

The majority of my art is based on my experiences/ what I'm going through at the time, my interests, my views and is a way of me projecting who I am as an individual.

I have worked on pieces that have expressed my mental health, I was diagnosed with depression and anxiety, I find that if I am going through a particularly hard time I tend to draw creatures that look like they're from nightmares, I'll draw them in black, like something that would appear from the shadows in your room, dimly lit by the moonlight coming through the curtains. There's something comforting about drawing when I'm having a bad day, like a release in my negative emotions, and personally I love the gothic, fantastical, horror vibe of these drawings, it's something to get the heads turning.

Other times when I'm creating, you'll see me using really bright colours, there's a contrast between my work, like they're both on two opposite ends, but this allows me to use different mediums and create whatever I feel like at the time, it keeps things interesting for me. It relates to how I present myself, everyday is different, every makeup look is different, I dye my hair different colours, I'm always trying new things throughout my life.

My brighter pieces often include skeletons/ skulls, fantasy characters and people who often spark my interest or look 'different'. I'm always experimenting with new materials, like paints and fabrics. I experiment with my paintings and how I frame them, not your average frame, I love gluing feather boas, netting and making frames with a hot glue gun. There's always something different happening in the background of each painting, I play around with psychedelic patterns, different shapes and colours, each piece of artwork has its own personality and characteristics, they tell a story in their own way. It's rewarding knowing I'm not afraid to try new things and to not conform to what other people think I should be doing. There are no rules when it comes to art, so I do whatever feels right to me.
